Welcome to Elementary Donut Party

Tomorrow morning is our “Welcome to Elementary” party.  This is an annual event, though it has looked different over the past few years.  This year it is different because this fall will be the first time kindergarten is included in our elementary environment.   So tomorrow we are welcoming kindergarteners and 1st graders.  In past years we have done pizza parties and ice cream parties.  This year Saturday morning was our only clear spot on the calendar, so we are having a donut party!

Here’s what we will do:

–  Eat lots of doughnuts.  When my Kaylie saw her invitation, she asked if it meant she could eat all the donuts she wanted.  Not so much.

–  Party inside of our elementary large group room.  This room can be intimidating for our little guys as it is bigger and more crowded than what they are used to.

– Learn the songs that we will be doing in large group during August.  That way they can come in feeling a little more comfortable.

–  I will share with parents very briefly our vision for what we want to see happen as we partner with them over the elementary years.

–  My staff will share the details of what they can expect on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights.

–  We will give them Bibles.  Many years ago when our ministry was much smaller (and budget was much more flexible) we gave away Bibles.  The past few years we have asked parents to share the cost with us.  Not only does it help with budget, but more importantly, we are able to truly say that these Bibles are a symbol of our partnership – given from mom and dad and the church.  We give them the NIrV Adventure Bible.

–  Most other years we have done a huge scavenger hunt which takes kids and parents to different rooms of the children’s hall and different parts of the church.  We decided to skip that this year since we will have two grade levels there.

As I alluded to above, this year will be extra special as my older daughter enters into the elementary ministry.  It’s very hard to believe, but it will be super cool watching what God does in her life.  It is a blessing to be able to be my kids’ children’s minister.
