This is one of those questions that I think God gives to kids just to remind us how dumb we really are. 🙂 Kids will get on a roll of asking, “Where did God come from?”, “Who made God?”, “Who are God’s parents?” Here is how I answer my little people when these questions start:
– The Bible tells us that in the beginning God was always there (Genesis 1:1). He is called the Alpha and Omega, which is like us saying “He is the A and the Z”. He is the beginning and the end. (Rev. 1:8)
– God is not like people. He doesn’t have to have a mama and a daddy. He didn’t have to be made or created. This is really hard for us to understand because it is different from how we think. It’s ok to not understand it. (I think this is a great thing to incorporate into our kids’ thinking early on… we can’t and won’t be able to make everything about God fit into our human boxes) That’s one of the most fabulous things about God. He is way too big for us to truly understand. God doesn’t have to have a beginning and He doesn’t have an ending.
– Use this as a teaching point for kids. God never changes. He doesn’t go away. He was never born and He will never die. God always is. He is the Great I AM. This is why we can depend on Him no matter what.
